How do you feel about ab exercises?

I’m switching to a weight lifting routine which skips ab exercises altogether. I’m going to do 2 days a week of circuit cardio instead but aside from that my abs won’t get any work. But I want nice abs!

Is this a good idea or a bad idea?

I heard that ab exercises are mostly a waste of time since there’s no such thing as spot reduction.

    Bad cause ab’s are the core to your stenght .I run on the treadmill at times from 30 to 45 mins every other day but the key is to do a diff program every time

    Don’t skip the ab exercises. Strong abs are important. Even though there is no such thing as spot reduction, your abs still will hold in your abdomen and make you appear thinner. And also the muscle you build in your abs will burn more calories! So keep the abs!

    I also heard that there was no such thing as targeting a specific area of the body to work on. I heard running/jogging, etc was the best way to lose weight around the waist and I guess if you want defined abs then you could try different exercises that work the abs. There was an article on bodybuilding.com that said not to let your muscles get ‘bored’.

    i’ve read everywhere that cardio is how you lose weight, everywhere. no spot reduction, as you said. ab exercises instead work the muscles. if you have fat there, the ab exercises won’t bring you the results you want, first you need to get the fat off. that being said, your cardio should work better. but…when the fat is gone and it’s just your abs, then those ab exercises are what will work the muscle so you’re on your way toward a six-pack, etc. even with fat there, you work out the muscles…unfortunately, it doesn’t help remove the fat so you can’t see the change
